January 2025 marked 250 years since the Fincastle Resolutions — the first colonial statement promising resistance to the death — were adopted right here in our region. July 4, 2026 marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence. Bristol is recognized by Virginia’s VA250 commission as a significant Revolutionary War site.
This is your moment to connect with history.
Why Fort Chiswell?
Our chapter takes its name from a frontier fort established in the late 1750s at a strategic crossroads in what is now Wythe County, Virginia. Nearby lead mines supplied ammunition that Thomas Jefferson called “inestimable” and “perhaps the sole means of supporting the American cause.” And in this region, in January 1775, frontier leaders adopted the Fincastle Resolutions — the first colonial statement promising to fight for liberty.
